It's that time again. That time when every song reminds me of Doctor Who.

A couple of sets of song lyrics, relatable to recent Doctor Who )

A Very Poignant Day [02 Jan 2010|01:56am]

Happy New Year, everyone. It seems like just yesterday I was writing "Happy New Year 2009" on a cardboard square left over from an unwrapped calendar to use as a prop in my YouTube videos that never made it past 10 episodes (so far...). And here we are again, at the start of a whole new year. Doesn't "2010" look somehow more futuristic than "2009"?

I don't know if it's just within the past couple years or if I've been noticing it more as I've gotten older, but I think a lot about the nature of mortality. It's a wonderful thing that there are ends and beginnings and everything has its cycle, but it also scares me to death. It's the unknown that I'm frightened of and death is the biggest unknown there is. As a child I went through a period of time where I would lay awake at night and think about how everyone dies, and how that was my destiny one day as well. A very frightening thought to a child. I would ask my parents, "Children don't die, right?" and they would respond, "No, children don't die," but I knew they were lying. They took me to see the Rabbi's wife to talk about the idea of death. She must have been a child psychologist or something. I wish I had a clearer picture of the discussion. Most of what I remember is playing with the afghan blanket while she talked. I questioned life and death again when my grandmother passed while I stood right there in the room. And again when I saw my friend Joe, my age, lying cold in his coffin in 2004.

I don't know where the essence of who we are goes, if we really see a tunnel with a bright light at the end, if we go to our own personal "heaven", or if we just cease to exist. No one can claim to really know. I feel lucky to live in an age where I am surrounded by various forms of media that feed my imagination and make me think further on the topic. Today I ended up seeing "The Lovely Bones" (despite all your suggestions that I see "Avatar"... thanks for those, and I will see it soon). Without spoiling anything in this post, I will say that it was an amazing movie and touched my emotions in a way that no film has done in a long time. It also made me think of the nature of "death". After all, the narrator is a dead 14-year-old girl. On the way home I was listening to the "This American Life" podcast, and a professor with a terminal disease had written a letter to his students to tell them why he couldn't make it to the class. One thing he said was, "I don't want to accept my own extinction," or something to that effect.

Then, Doctor Who tonight.
Brief spoiler )

But ends are also beginnings, and the end of one thing makes way for the beginning of another. For example, my Dad is retiring from his job of over 30 years. He was offered a good deal and he accepted it. His ending at Medrad makes way for an exciting new beginning- maybe as a professor and as a consultant.
The other more fanciful example would of course be that Tennant's Doctor ends his tenure as Matt Smith hops onboard with Steven Moffat for a new beginning.
Personally, I hope this will be a year with a lot of good new beginnings.

As I nod off to sleep, may you all have a pleasant tomorrow. And the day after that, and after that, and after that, and so on. (Side note-- it may be good to write a blog one day soon where I am not about to fall asleep.)

The End of Time: Part One [30 Dec 2009|12:12pm]

Ok, so obviously my resolution to blog every day hasn't held much water thus far. But I'm blogging right now and that's what counts, eh?

Anyway, these are my thoughts on Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part One. And I am very happy to be able to use my Doctor/Master icon, because it's made of sexy. Guh.

Spoilers, duh! )

Bears [27 Dec 2009|06:11pm]

squirmelia
A small child who looked a bit like me was colouring something in, or maybe reading, although I do not remember what now. A bear landed in the garden, by the pond, and the child who looked a bit like me was alarmed and started screaming, "a bear! a bear! there's a bear!". The child's mother rushed into the room, but when she saw the bear, she was convinced she saw a heron flying away, as bears were not often seen in gardens in the south of England. Not at that time of year, anyway.

Journals and blogging - a few questions for politically minded bloggers [27 Dec 2009|11:03am]

scaryj

From what I see wandering around LJ it does seem to be getting quieter - particularly when one is attemptiing to write and comment about current affairs. One of my new years resolutions is to start a new blog on current affairs with particular emphasis on science, technology, human rights and climate change. Judging by the response on LJ to most peoples entries on current affairs this does not seem to be the best place for this. This LJ will still be here but will mostly be for personal entries and for staying in touch with friends.

So, are there any blogging spots anybody would recommend I check out? Ideally I would like one that is UK based if possible.

Thanks all!

Here is photographic evidence  that the aformentioned white Christmas did take place this year

Here is a jolly snowman on Christmas eve

Preparing for a sleigh ride!

Two intrepid explorers prepare for an expidition of a lifetime (Edward's!)

Our two explorers must deal with all manner of treacherous conditions including surprise slopes

Tobogganing for the first time since 2000 and for the first time ever!

It is still a winter wonderland up here in Yorkshire but I suspect that thaw is coming now. It was nice while it lasted although I didn't get out in  it much. Curse you common cold!

Having a very merry white Christmas! [25 Dec 2009|09:53pm]

scaryj

Currently in North Yorkshire with the family and the three tigglers as well as an incredibly annoying head cold. It seems whenever I stop the Concrete Nostril strikes again.

Still...

We have snow. We still have snow and lots of it deep white and fluffy. Attempts to start a snowball fight have failed but that is just as well today since I now have a fould headcold.

This is the first white Christmas since 1981 for me and I can barely remember it. I wonder if Edward will remember this one?

I looked out my bedroom window and felt like I was on an aeroplane, as I could see snowflakes clinging to the glass.
